Pierre Chabloz, founder of the European Gymnastics Union and former secretary general of the Swiss Olympic Committee, died Thursday. He was 91. Helena Jonsson of Sweden won the World Cup biathlon opener on Thursday. Jonsson shot clean and finished the 15-kilometer event in 45 minutes, 5.1 seconds. Kati Wilhelm of Germany, who missed one target at the first shooting station, was 39.7 seconds back. Ekaterina Iourieva of Russia was third. Jonsson earned her second World Cup title in front of fans from her home country.

Held every Sunday, the market is thought to have been in existence since Roman times and can attract up to 50-100,000 people, including ethnic Uyghurs, Pakistani merchants, and traveling Kazakhs.

Just about everything is traded here, especially livestock: sheep, camels, horses and cattle (and their manure!). Horses are tested for their speed and sheep sheared to look good for their new owners.
